What is SS316 stainless steel?
SS316 is an austenitic stainless steel with about 17% chromium, 10% nickel and 2–3% molybdenum. The molybdenum gives it much better resistance to pitting from seawater, salt air and chlorides than 304, which makes it the standard choice for marine, coastal and chemical work in the Gulf.
316L is the low-carbon version (0.03% max). It is preferred for welded parts and is the most common form supplied today. Tell us which version your drawing calls for, and we'll quote to that exact grade.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between SS316 and SS316L?
Both have the same chromium, nickel and molybdenum. 316L has lower carbon (0.03% max against 0.08%), so it resists corrosion better at weld zones and is the usual choice for welded parts. 316 is slightly stronger.
SS316 or SS304: which should I use?
316 contains 2–3% molybdenum, which gives much better resistance to seawater, salt air and chlorides. For marine, coastal and chemical use in the Gulf, 316 or 316L is the safer choice; 304 suits indoor and general use at lower cost.
Is SS316 magnetic?
No. SS316 is austenitic, so it is non-magnetic in the annealed condition. Cold working may make it very slightly magnetic.
