What is SS309S stainless steel?
SS309 is an austenitic stainless steel with about 23% chromium and 13% nickel. It resists oxidation and holds its strength at temperatures where 304 starts to scale, and it costs less than 310, which makes it a common choice for furnace and kiln parts.
309S is the low-carbon version (0.08% max). It welds more easily and is preferred for welded assemblies. 309 is also widely used for joining stainless steel to carbon steel. Tell us which version your drawing calls for, and we'll quote to that exact grade.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between SS309 and SS309S?
Both have the same chromium and nickel. 309S has lower carbon (0.08% max against 0.20%), so it is easier to weld and less prone to corrosion at weld zones. For most welded fabrication, 309S is the usual choice.
SS309S or SS310S: which should I use?
310S has more chromium and nickel, so it resists oxidation to about 1150 °C. 309S works to about 1095 °C in continuous service and costs less. If your parts run below that range, 309S is often the more economical choice.
What is the maximum temperature for SS309S?
About 1095 °C in continuous service and about 980 °C where heating and cooling cycles are frequent.
Is SS309S magnetic?
No. SS309S is austenitic, so it is non-magnetic in the annealed condition. Cold working may make it very slightly magnetic.
